Let's see how many people actually look at my page and see this, as opposed to just copying and pasting a generic thank you and a link to the work I've already favorited.
Don't get me wrong; I don't mind brief or generic copy-pasted thank yous. But I HATE HATE HATE it when the person posts a link to the piece, thereby turning my page into a billboard of sorts for their work. Come on, people. I don't want to be your free commercial.
Hmm - this is funny as it's something I do all the time, not because I want to make a billboard of the person who fav'd a piece, but to thank them for faving a particular piece. I will get people posting thank-you's on my page for fav's ages after I've done so, and I've got no idea what it was of theirs that I fav'd. I for one appreciate a link back to the piece to remind me of what I was pleased to see in the first place and it gives me a chance to enjoy it again.
I actually had someone recently send me several nasty messages escalating in their intensity and who finally banned me for thanking them with a link on their page, and my only response was to the first message apologizing for having posted the link, having not noticed a journal entry asking people not do to so, albeit not clearly.
I'll have to pay closer attention to this when I'm thanking people.
-- Me(E): you are a dreamcrusher, Alex. A brilliant one, but a dreamcrusher. A: haha E: you are, sir. I should go dig up Langston Hughes and tell him that. A: you should E: "What happens to a dream deferred?" "It gets stomped on by Alex."
Duly noted. So when I thank you for a favorite, if you comment back on my page or do anything that may make me more popular on deviantART or even seem more popular from my dA stat's, I will hunt down and kill your fiftieth-born son.
I don't link the piece and mention the title occasionally. You're right, others' pages are not advertising billboards. dA has adCast for that

Discussing page views, activity and popularity, ~ChaoticSkye explores the inner workings of the community on deviantART from her point of view.

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it. Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article.
In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.

It seems not to be an uncommon sentiment though, so it is worth watching for.
