Artist's Comments

This is an old piece that I never properly photographed nor shared. So here it is; I bought the pendant in Ottawa, Canada, about seven years ago. None of the chains I had really suited it, so I didn't wear it for five years. When I got to college, I joined the Society for Creative Anachronisms (SCA), a group devoted to Medieval and Renaissance reenactment, crafts, garb, and lifestyles. They taught me how to do chainmail, so I built this chain myself. It took about two weeks of intensive frustration and finger callousing, but it was totally worth it. :)

The design of the chain is from 12th century Europe, if I remember correctly. I believe it is a box weave. It is dense as hell and very heavy to wear, so I usually only wear it with my garb: [link] . :giggle:

Chainmal's tough to do; good work there!

Did you make your own rings or buy them? This is amazing to me because i only know how to do 4 in 1 weave.

For this chain, I used purchased rings. It was when I was first getting into maille that my friend taught me to make this (I'm always leary of obtaining supplies and materials for hobbies I'm just learning because it can be costly and I don't know if I'd like them yet) XD But I did like it, so recently I've been making my own. I've been thinking about redoing this, or at least making a chain with my own rings in the same style. Do you make your own rings?

yes i do. I use a drill and a metal rod and wear gloves (when i didn't wear gloves my hands got cut allot and as i play the guitar that was an especially bad thing). I wrap the wire around the metal rod. Then i use wire cutters to cut links of of the coil. Next I open all of the links and attach them to the piece that i am working on.

Nice! I haven't heard anyone using a drill before. The two friends I had that made their own rings fashioned a medieval-style contraption by way of a handle and rod (kind of like a rotisserie apparatus) and that seemed to work well; they used wire cutters to cut the rings also. I use a hardwood dowel, pliers, and wire cutters. It's not the best mode in the world (my hands get really tired and sore), and the dowel only allows for one size (I could get other dowels, I guess...). How do you use the drill?
