Literature Text

I.  carnelian

Burning stone and ash
make a slender wisp of smoke,
carry our prayers.

II.  yellow jasper

Mercy be a red-
wing'd blackbird amid gold wheat,
humble as the earth.

III.  blue fluorite

Dreams come, the color
of water beneath tall pines,
distant promises.

IV.  goldstone

Days wax golden bright;
they give us much to think about,
windfall and harvest.

V.  moonstone

Moon and loon on lake
haunting night melodies like
trees gathering snow.

VI.  pyrite

No gleaming secret
mountain pulse, veins bright and deep
a fool's trick of sight.

VII.  amethyst

A too-brief lilac
fallen and crushed against path
has the sweetest scent.

VIII.  jet

Night's edge softened by
growing light in the east, a
morning song of doves.
This was written for *WickedlyLoquacious's club contest. It had to be a poem comprised of eight haiku.

I could babble about this one forever, but will only go on a little bit about the method. I used my rock collection to help me write this one, blindly drawing stones from a bag and then meditating on the color, texture, shape, features, all the history and mythology I know about it, etc. Then I took it more personally and related the stones back to myself and my own personal symbolism. I'm not sure how successful this was, but it was definitely a fun time and I would like to do such a thing again perhaps. :)

This flows really well. Erm. I'm complete rubbish when it comes to either writing or evaluating haiku, but I am impressed that you used the correct plural form. And I enjoyed reading it, it was very lyrical.

Thanks for writing,
J.
