Come Sail AwayRita put down the phone and sighed. She hated making trips out of the café but she needed supplies to keep the business going until the following day. Her leaving always left an opportunity for things to get out of control. She grabbed her jacket before giving a quick glance to the crowded café. The barista sighed as the building was full with the end of summer crowd. All of the troublemakers were here, but so were the rule followers.

"Alright, Trisha, you hold down the fort while I get the coffee filters," Rita ordered her second command at the counter. The people in the café chimed in on this conversation and a select few sm

Balance Of FateThe doctors tell me repeatedly she is lucky to be alive. I wish they wouldn't do that. I constantly dwell on the moment she will awake-she will ask me, where are her husband and son? And then what will I tell her? I wonder if she was really lucky. I wonder why God chose her to be alive, but I know better then to question the Divine Will. She is oblivious now to everything but the physical pain.

graveyardCecile's yard was the envy of the whole neighborhood. It was bright and vibrant with rows of flowers covering every inch. Cecile poured her heart and soul into the yard and everyone knew it.

Just a few years ago, the yard was devoid of colour. Only weeds thrived there. They smothered the soil and took everything for themselves, leaving nothing for the flowers. Cecile plucked them out when she started gardening, right after her husband disappeared in the dead of the night.

In Some Trouble

"Naw, naw, I was just kidding before!" He was smiling into the camera, could imagine her wide eyes now flecked with confusion. He held up the bag. "Look, I brought it all back. Safe and sound."

Forsaken

There was no relief the next morning, either. The two police officers sat side by side, watching the debris float by; sometimes a broken chair, a child's stuffed doll; sometimes a half-clothed body bobbing in a surreal way on the surface. They were long past the desire to snag anything.

Sergeant Riley shifted on the roof shingles. He was playing with his gun, now he looked at his companion. His face was already a deep shade of red. "What do ya think'll do us first---the water or the sun?"

Sergeant Jackson shook his head. "Water, water everywhere," he said.

The Room

They had always thought the veterinarian at the end of their street was a strange bird. So when they broke into his house on a dare before graduation, they were not surprised to find many bizarre curios.

What did surprise them---and it stayed with them, too---was one room. It was small, no larger than a closet, and its walls were lined with white neon lights that came on when they flipped a switch by the door.

There, hung on every inch of surface, were x-rays of horse's heads. Rows and rows of oblong skulls with hollow, haunting eyes.

The clock on her grandfather's mantelpiece had been broken since she was a little girl. She could remember the day that he opened its tiny glass door and moved the hands so they would read a minute to midnight. He turned and gave her a wink before closing the case again.

The night he died, she was sitting in the living room reading a book. Her eyes went up and unbidden to the clock. Its hands moved, just once, of their own accord. Midnight at last.

Her book fell to the floor; for she knew, then, that he was gone.

Bayou Maiden

Some claimed they had seen her in the bayou, an Ophelia of the swamps. Floating on her back, her dark hair radiating in tendrils around her, white dress translucent in the water. The glimpse of form beneath her gown was enough to drive men mad; many had jumped overboard to go after her. They met ragged alligator jaws or the sharp poison of moccasins before reaching her arms.

Others did not see her, but they describe a sweet, lone voice in the darkness. And there are some who swear it was her hands that first made water lilies grow there.

My entry for this year's six-word story contest, and my corresponding illustration.

For me, part of what defines a story or poem is its interpretability. "She" might be a reader or a writer; may be reading the book or may have written it. "Conquers" is the strongest word, and therefore the most important one. What does it mean here? She may be suppressing everyone and everything else in the world while she reads; she may be changing the way that everyone in the world thinks with her writing; her book may be an international best seller, overcoming age and cultural differences everywhere.

This was a play on an old adage ("she could stop you with a look") and inspired by those books that say something like, "translated into over 32 languages!" on their front covers.

i know exactly how it feels to conquer everything with a book (the first interpretation) but also another, because books can teach you how to overcome obstacles as well. beautifully done.
